Five men were arrested on felony robbery charges in an undercover sting operation in Austin August 18.

According to a federal court affidavit, five men met at a South Austin hotel with someone they thought was a disgruntled member of a drug-trafficking organization. Prosecutors say they brought weapons for a robbery they thought would net them cocaine from a local drug house. The person who set up the robbery was really an undercover agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Defense lawyers for the five men say they are looking closely at the role of confidential informants in each case and the possibility of an entrapment defense.

According to officials with the Austin Police Department, Carrillo was gone when police arrived and K9 units failed to locate him.

Central Texas is launching a new campaign to stop people from drinking and driving. The campaign is called “Drink and Drive, and Got to Jail” and police officials use a cop-cab to\help show there point; take a cab if you have been drinking or you will end up in the back of a cop car.

In 2008, one-third of all the fatal accidents in Texas had drunk drivers involved. The Austin Police Department has announced that they will be enforcing a “No Refusal” weekend on Labor Day weekend this year in order to prevent people from getting behind the wheel after driving.

A ‘No Refusal’ weekend means that anyone pulled over by police may have to submit to a blood test if they refuse to blow into the Breathalyzer. The blood is drawn by a nurse after a judge signs a search warrant if there is reasonable cause to do so.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Kirk Brandon Muller was the 2,000th man arrested. The Statesman reports that Muller, who was “convicted in 1993 for indecency with four children, was arrested for being in contact with a young girl, a violation of his parole, Abbott said.”

These divisions are part of Abbott’s plan for hyper-vigilance of sex offenders. He says this population is the most likely to repeat their crime, so he wants to stay on top of them.

According to San Marcos Local News, “Hays County Sheriff Tommy Ratliff said Tuesday morning that he will again ask the Texas Rangers to investigate the June 22 incident in which deputies have been accused of brutality during the arrest of an 80-year-old Woodcreek man and his son.”

Both Robert Threadgill and his son, Stephen, have filed complaints against the Sheriffs Office.

On June 22, deputies received a call from an employee at the Lodge at Cypress Falls. He claimed Robert Threadgill refused to stop throwing debris at the condo’s dam, which makes up their swimming area, and began yelling and cursing at him upon the employee’s pleas for him to stop. Threadgill’s condo is adjacent to the Lodge. He reports that the Lodge continually throws trash in his portion of the creek, so he was returning the favor.

According to San Marcos Local News, “The Threadgills and a witness, Doyle Odom, said deputies used excessive and unwarranted force during the arrest. Wimberley EMS Director Ken Strange said Robert Threadgill suffered a ‘badly sprained leg’ and that Stephen Threadgill was diagnosed with a concussion.” Robert Threadgill also says that he and his son sustained more injuries in an inhuman transport by a police cruiser.

The father and son are charged with, “disorderly conduct by profane and abusive language and with resisting arrest,” according to the San Marcos Local News.
