The City of Austin is considering an increase in property taxes next year in order to cover the costs of expected rises in conditions that are said to be out of the city’s control. The city believes that fuel and health care expenses will increase next year, among other things, and therefore those costs will have to be supplemented somewhere else.

The proposed property tax raise would increase from 48.11 cents per $100 of property value to 49.95 cents per $100 of property value. This correlates to an increase of approximately $33 a year for an owner of a median-valued home.
The forecast also takes into account a 3 percent raise for all city employees in 2012.

If the city were to decrease the property tax rate, calculating in the influx of fuel and healthcare, it would not be able to cover approximately $18 million in costs by the end of the 2012 fiscal year. The City Manager will look into all of the budget options before proposing the official 2012-2013 budget on August 1, 2012.
