A man in Tyler, Texas has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for possession of marijuana.

The 54 year-old Tyler resident, Henry Walter Wooten, was stopped by police on March 4th. Law enforcement officers caught Wooten with 4.6 ounces of marijuana in his possession. Wooten was pulled over within 1000 feet of Ebenezer Day Care Center, which added to his charges.

A Department of Public Safety official testified in Wooten’s trial. The DPS forensic chemist testified that 4.6 ounces of marijuana was seized from Wooten, but the packaging itself weight 1.06 ounces.

In Texas possession of marijuana under four ounces is a misdemeanor, above four ounces however is a felony, which could result in 2 years in prison. Wooten’s proximity to the day care however meant he was in a ‘drug free zone’. Richard Vance, the Smith County Assistant District Attorney asked the jury to return a sentence of 99 years in Wooten’s case.

For the second time in a week, a package of marijuana was mailed to the South Texas College bookstore in Weslaco.

The bookstore received a UPS shipment of books shortly before 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The store manager was opening the incoming packages when she noticed something wrapped in Bubble Wrap and diapers. “I found a food saver bags just jam packed with marijuana,” she said. “I went ahead and I notified campus security. Campus security came over and notified Weslaco P.D. … I was just completely shocked, because nothing ever exciting happens here at this store.”

Police say the package contained twenty pounds of marijuana. It was mailed to an address in Florida that did not exist, and listed the bookstore as the return address.

Illinois State Police troopers intercepted more than two tons of Marijuana in the back of a semi-truck from Texas.

A traffic stop on Interstate 57, shortly before 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, led to the discovery of over two tons of marijuana being shipped from Texas to Chicago. Officers became suspicious when the driver of the semi, 31 year-old Jesus Guzman, could not answer simple questions about the contents of the truck. Gusman claimed he was transporting cabbage. A canine inspection of the vehicle alerted officers to the drugs inside the trailer.

Illinois State Police District 10 Capt. Stuart Shaver said the street value of the marijuana is in excess of $19.8 million.

Guzman and two passengers, 35 year-old Eric Cabrera and 32 year-old Joshua Cornillez, are charged with cannabis trafficking each is being held on $1 million bond.

Shaver expressed his approval of the arresting officers’ work, saying “The truck was stopped for following too closely. There was also a log book violation. As the trooper was talking with the individuals, he realized they were not informed on the trucking industry… I’m very proud of our officers. This is the largest drug seizure for this district and probably in the top 10 for Illinois.”

Roger Dale Jackson and Heather Jackson of Dayton, Texas, are facing multiple charges following a traffic stop shortly before 2:00 p.m. Friday. According to the 27th Judicial District Drug Task Force, the Jackson’s were stopped in a black 1994 Nissan Altima with Texas tags for an alleged traffic violation. Officers searched the vehicle and found two marijuana cigarettes inside a cigarette box and five Adderal capsules in the glove compartment.

A search of the bags in the vehicle’s truck turned up 94 grams of marijuana and a plastic bag containing $12,650. According to a DTF press release, a statement given by one of the Jackson’s claimed the money was not their own but rather drug money given to them by a friend in Madisonville, KY.
