August 26th, 2010 · No Comments

A drunken driver involved in a 2008 crash that killed an Austin woman has been sentenced to three years in prison.

According to court documents, 35 year-old JAmes Kevin Blackerby had been convicted of driving while intoxicated three times prior to his 2008 arrest after the crash that killed 21 year-old Heather Heyns. The arrest affidavit indicates Blackerby told officer he drank beer at Ego’s bar when he left for Hot Bodies Gentleman’s Club in Southeast Austin that night. Shortly after 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Burelson Road and Montopolis Drive, Blakcerby’s silver Ford F250 pickup crashed into a pickup in which Heyns was a passenger.

Blackerby struck a plea deal with Travis County prosecutors and will serve three years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Blackerby will be required to wear an alcohol detection device and will be required to install a device on his car that does not allow it to be started if the operator has been drinking.
