U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Bridge of the Americas commercial cargo facility in El Paso seized 1,470 pounds of marijuana in one bust on Thursday.
The seizure was made around 10:15 a.m. when a 1994 Freightliner tractor entered the BOTA cargo facility from Mexico. Border Protection officers selected the vehicle for gamma-ray exam and identified several anomalies in the back of the trailer. When Border Protection drug sniffing dogs searched the trailer they alerted officials to the front wall, which was found to be a false wall, behind which officers found 358 bundles of marijuana, amounting to 1,470 pounds.
The 38 year-old driver, a Mexican national, was turned over to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. He remains in jail without bond. The seizure is the second in a week to take place at the Bridge of the Americas facility. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered 951 pounds of marijuana in an empty trailer earlier this week.
