Texas DWI Laws Could Become Steeper

October 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Two potential new laws will be re-introduced to the Texas Legislature this year, due in large part to activism from groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The laws were rejected during the last session, but have begun to gain popular support after several widely publicized alcohol-related tragedies. People who support passing these laws also point to the fact that Texas has the most DWI fatalities in the country.

The first proposed law would establish sobriety checkpoints were police could test random drivers. Texas legislators have previously rejected this law on the basis that it is unconstitutional, although all but 10 other states have these checkpoints. The second law would require drunk drivers to install an ignition lock device in their cars after the first offense, an plan that has not been studied in detail yet.

If you have been accused of drunk driving, excellent legal representation is more important now than ever. Contact Austin DWI defense attorney Ian Inglis at 512-472-1950.
